Junior Angling - Getting them Started in Fishing

Junior Angling - Getting Started in Fishing.

I am often asked by friends and customers for advice on what their kids need to start fishing, whether it be on rivers or still waters.

First and foremost the choice of equipment is very important. There is no point in buying a 6 foot rod with no action, in some sort of juniors starter kit. I say that because they will get no enjoyment out of using it. The rod will be difficult to use and not really suited for its intended purpose.

Buy a nice float rod 9 – 12 feet in length. This will have sufficient action to allow them to cast properly and also play and land fish in an enjoyable and efficient manner. There are plenty of rods available to choose from and without spending a great deal of money. Anything from £20 - £40 will buy you a rod that will last a junior for many years and will give him much more use and pleasure than a cheapy, cheapy poker.

Secondly, a small fixed spool reel. Again there are many makes available and you can buy a very reasonable reel these days for around £10 - £20.

All they need now is maybe a small stool and a tackle bag and box with the usual bits of tackle: floats, hooks, disgorger, weights, and float rubbers etc. etc. and they should be ready to rock and roll.

If they enjoy it from day one, then they are likely to fish for their lifetime. It’s a great pastime for youngsters and a constructive one. They are safe and enjoying the great outdoors and not cooped up in the sitting room, in front of the TV, on their X Box or PS3!!
